If we played with gerrard and lampard gunning foward, and hargreaves as DM, then we'd have to play one up top, because a 3-5-2 is out of the question. Lampard should be dropped. Gerrard was the best player on the pitch against Brazil, just look at the anaylsis, player ratings, if you didn't see the match. Anyways most prem sides play with either a holding mid, or just flat in the midfield, and hargreaves would out do Lampard on his current form in either formation. Lampard hasn't done well for England in a while, and should be put on the bench, because to compensate for him at the expense for others is wrong. In the end it's about the best player's who do the job out there and unfortunately Stevie out on the right, holding role ( even though he played well there, it's only a testament to his versatility, I'm sure he's angry about playing there, and envied Lampard's role.) isn't where he wants to be. And dropping Lampard to the bench, or altogether isn't where he wants to be either..
The politics of football..

Lampard hasnt been doin well u have to admit that. and 4-5-1 is the only way i can see england playing them both in their favored postions at the same time with hargreaves behind them. with owen up front alone he wont get much time on the ball, and they need stronger attack for more goals..
4-4-2 is their safest option with better team selection. The starting 11 brought into some games is ridiculous in my opinion because players are having conflicting roles and theres no chemistry at all

England does have a healthy midfield problem.
In my opinion, just play a 4-4-2 and put Beckham, Hargreaves, Gerrard, and Joe Cole in the midfield.

How about this:
Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Owen Hargreaves, David Beckham.
3 of them (except Owen) can go and attack and leaves Owen behind for the holding job. Joe Cole and Gerrand can play as playmakers with Joe Cole cutting inside and Gerrand with his strong passes. Beckham can play as usual, putting crosses for the strikers. How about that? I don't think Lampard and Gerrard can operate well in midfield together.

I agree with you about the fact we should play premiership style, but, you named Hargreaves, and he would be the holding midfielder in a midfield with Gerrard and Lampard.I don`t think it matters how good your opponents are,if you have someone on the team whose job it is to get the ball back then you can spend more time in possession.

To markyD... without Lampards goals in qualifying we wouldn't have even got to the world cup! No one seems to notice the ugly things that Lamps does every game like tracking back, clearing from set pieces, linking play. All you concentrate on is one shot that ballooned over the bar! What else did he do wrong? NOTHING!!! he helped keep arguably the best midfield in world football quiet and its about time you so called supporters got off his back. The clue is in the word... support-ers!!!!
