I am not sure how long a commute you can tolerate, but I am a big fan of the Upper East Side. There are a number of subways along Lexington Avenue (77th & 86th streets to name a few). There are a ton of restaurants, bars, it is very safe, and convenient to everything - including a walk across town to Central Park. From 86th Street, if you take an express subway, you can expect around a 25 minute trip to downtown.

look into trump towers. If no vacancies. . .try an apartment on the upper east side, or even tribeca or greenwich village With a door man. . .

Unfortunatly. . . .affordable and safe are two words that can not describe NY apt leasing in the same breath.
Good luck,
and for the Hudson River valley .. . . why dont you go online and find their local news paper classified section and make some calls. . . .

Most people seem to by pass living in NY City and move North to Dutchess County. Taxes and Home prices are reasonable compared to those of Westchester County which is just outside of the city. Many people car pool it or take the metro north Train into the city every day to work. You'd be further ahead buying instead of renting also. It just so happens we are selling our home at a price reduction presently. We are close to shopping and trains and right near the Taconic State Parkway which will take you right into the city. Folks in our neighborhood commute to NYC every day either by car pooling or train. The home is in an area of fine homes and a great neighborhood. It has 4 bdrms and 2.5 baths. It's a two story colonial with a full front porch on 1.69 acres. It is in move in condition and we can close whenever buyer is ready.. Feel free to contact us at ursaitaliano70@yahoo.com for more info and the mls listing link.

Okay first of all you will find absolutely nothing that is economical in Manhattan period. Whether uptown or downtown (especially the closer you are to the downtown area.) Those areas that are safe (safer than other areas) are the $2,000.00 for a box of an apartment and higher. I don't know anything about hudson, NY. I do suggest you check craigslist.com regarding apartments. How I found mine.

Unless you're very, very lucky or have a lot of time on your hand, you are going to need the help of a professional realtor for both the New York area (try downtown Brooklyn) and/or Hudson, NY. Many realtors are paid by the landlord, some by the tenant. Check first, good luck.

Best suggestion would be to live in the Hudson valley a train ride to the city can range from 30 minutes to grand central all the way to 1 hour and 45 minutes (poughkeepsie). I am a real estate agent who could help with your search.
