could someone explain it to me please?

he charged $55,000 or something to give a speech on poverty... a topic he's been working on for the past few years years and many consider him somewhat of an expert on...

many experts charge to speak at universities for fields of their expertise? was that money going to a homeless shelter or something before he took it? I highly doubt it...

in fact many people charge a lot for speeches like this...

can someone connect the dots...

some seem to think just because he makes money doing something many do... he can't be for poverty or something?

why?

colleges often have funds set up for speakers... often hundreds of thousands of dollars for it... if not him, it would go to some other speaker charging similar costs?
it's not just one big pile of money... it's all been budgeted out most of the time for things like this...

I agree it isn't a big deal - not like that schmuck is going to win anyway.

People think money for speakers at public colleges is provided by tax payer money. Most of it is not. It is provided by alumni donations and by endowments granted to the universities or colleges in the form of donations, trusts and grants.
BTW, some people can't connect the dots because they don't see the dots.

$55,000 for a speech is cheap by today's standards. And, Edwards gives back in so many more ways. He has made many free speeches and done community work. That's alot more than many people on these boards have done who are desparately nit-picking and cherry picking non-issues to try to rip on him.
I would like to know why they don't rip on Barbara Bush for her $700 hair cut paid for by taxpayer money before the last innagural ball. Yet, they rip on Edwards for paying for his own $400 hair cut. It's all about ignorance.

I am not an Edwards fan, but there is nothing wrong with him charging for his speeches.

The problem is that he has developed a reputation as someone out of touch with regular people. He lives in a really huge home, gets $400 haircuts and charges more than most people make in a year for one speech on poverty.

He is setting himself up for attacks on his judgment.

For an avowed socialist you seem to support some interesting people.
It's just a funny contrast.
News is about the strange, the odd, the unusual.
Some people think that about Republicans.

Silly on both counts.

Me? I'm a democrat, old style (not socialist or even liberal).

Let's all throw a pity party for poor ol' John. Why, nobody sees the hypocrisy of it all? He learns about the poor by working for a hedge fund? He gets $400 dollar haircuts while claiming there are two americas? If a Republican did this kind of crap you libs would be all over him. We wouldn't see any other news for days. Yes, you poor, poor put-upon libs. Life is so unfair.

They ignore the fact that Edwards actually knows about living on the 'poor side'. He was raised with meager means and has risen above it. Nothing wrong with that or for charging what he charges to speak at an event. Check the going rate for Rudy, it is much higher.

People who don't have any REAL issues to pick at him for so they pick on him because of non issues like the price of his hair cut or cost of his speeches. Even after we explain what seems like a hundered times that all those people make tons of money to speak. He is actually one of the least expensive. Some people just don't want to listen. Hard headed it appears.

Cut him some slack.
He gets beat up for chasing ambulances.
He gets beat up when he stops.
There really is no justice.

Because the $55,000 is Tax Money taken from us Taxpayers and given to the college.
(When you get a job, and pay taxes, you'll understand.)
