When Hearst died the property was conveyed to his children. With the family fortune split so many ways they could not afford to keep the property up. Also construction on the property was still on going up to Hearsts' death. To complete the work that was cheduled would have continued to cost great sums of money.
The family approached the state and offered to let the department of parks and recreation care for the home in exchange for the state managing the upkeep of the property and surrounding grounds. This has gone on for many years. If I recall correctly the property is held in trust for the citizens of California. The family MAY have some redemption and or usage clause in this agreement but I o not recall. The state cares for and protects the treauses inside including the 2 GIANT pools, all of the art works and the other items of period history.
If you have not had the opportunity to view the castle I highly recommend the adventure. It is stunning. The art collection is rotated through so there is always something new for you to see even if you have been there before. Last time I went through the Castle several years ago the state was running something like 4-5 tours showing off specific parts of the home and grounds.
If you need more in depth info about the castle please look it us on the department of parks and recreation page accessable through www.ca.gov
Have Fun!

No, Hearst Castle is a State Historical Monument. This means that it is government owned and can not be sold.

Nope...it's owned by the state of California and it's not for sale. Not to say that the right offer of several TRILLION dollars might get some attention. Call Arnold!
