Don't feed cheapie cat food. We feed dry Nutro Max (not recalled) and it seems to help with the odor. Try using a brand that is formulated to keep odor down. Use litterbox liners--they really help with doing the nasty job of changing it. Scoop daily and change it at least once a week. Periodically chuck the litterbox and buy a new one even if you use liners.

Use Mimi brand kitty litter $3.99 a bag, I have three cats and it doesn't smell. I change it every two weeks(one bag=one change) and scoop whenever it is dirty which in my case is several times a day or whenever I walk past. You should be able to get away with once a day. When you scoop be sure you stir the litter as well....sounds weird but it helps. Also scrub your litter box with pine sol or a deodorizer every time you change the litter.Another good thing for controlling odor is to use a covered litter box with the air filters only cost about $15. You may also want to buy a kitty litter tracker mat $4 that goes in front of the opening to the litter box, keeps the litter from tracking around the house which also causes odors. These changes will do wonders.

My two cats use the type of litter that "clumps" so it's easy to remove dirty litter, which I do 3 or 4 times per day. I top up with fresh litter when necessary so that they always have at least three inches of litter to dig into. Every week I wash the litter box and completely change the litter.
In the UK you can buy litter deodorisers from vets, pet shops and supermarkets which you can sprinkle on the litter when you've just cleaned it. The Bob Martin brand has a particularly pleasant aroma as it's not the usual pine scent that a lot of these deodorisers have.

Try a different brand of litter. The new Fresh Step with Odor Eliminating Carbon really cut down on the stinkiness of my kitten's litter box, plus the litter itself doesn't smell bad. I have a tiny apartment and I don't want the entire place to stink from the litter box.

I use a closed in litter tray (i.e one with a hood and a cat flap to get in and out), which not only keeps any smells inside, but also stops the litter form spilling out. The best cat litter I've found is a clumping litter with a baby powder scent. I was using a fine grain but it stuck to her fur and claws, so I switched to a medium grain and it's perfect. This is the one I use (but I'm sure there are plenty of other similar brands):

The fact that it's a clumping litter means you are taking out the solid and liquid wast daily, so it never has a chance to get smelly. Plus the baby powder scent hides any lingering smells!

I find that the covered over, igloo, type of litter box is very good as it has an odour filter in the lid. Frequent changing of the litter is essential, say every two days for a permanently indoor cat, or less often for one like mine, who only uses it at night and the garden during the day.
They are available at all pet stores and look, at a quick glance, like a travel basket.

I buy Catsan and that doesn't smell and also line the tray with special liners that smell nice, I also keep a air freshener nearby the litter tray as well. I change the litter every couple of days, if I notice a number 2 in there, I put my hand in a empty bag and get it out straight away and put in the bin outside.

Well you could put a air freshener around the box. There are other things you can put in the litter to help with smell too, go to the pet shop and ask there they can show you what they have. Or you could try a automatic litter box so after they use it, the arm comes out and scrapes the feces or urine into a closed container. Try a scent cat litter and scope in the A.M. and P.M.

Try different brands of litter and if that doesn't work, then you might need to try a different brand of cat food. Some cat foods can cause a cat to stink up the whole house.

I have one of the closed litter boxes with filters in the top, this helps a lot with the smell.
Also, get some nappy sacks and lift out the faeces and put it in the bin immediately so it doesnt build up a smell.
