lights that seem to be in combat..?

i'm in sth west victoria,at 2.15am this morning i watched what looked like a star in the north sky,it was brighter than the rest,then it seemed to spit in two and cirlce the each other,sometimes it would look like one again and then shoot across the sky a "short" distance then return to the initial spot,and combat again..sometimes there was flashes of red and green,i watched this for about 45min,i have seen it before but thought i was drunk(lol) sober as last night though..

I just checked in my Starry Night software, and I think what you were seeing was the very bright star Vega, which would have been very close to your northern horizon at that time. Bright stars when they are very low often flash different colours because of turbulence in the atmosphere, and may even appear to split and coalesce, somewhat akin to a mirage.

I seen something almost exactly like your describing a few years back but i happened in a small town in B.C. Canada the first time i seen it i was fine but my friends where stoned and the weird thing is they seen it before i did and they pointed it out to me, at first i thought is was some crazy dirt bikers on the other side of the river but then i seen the lights fly into the sky and then i kind of started to wonder if maybe i had a little buzz going but it didn't so after 10 to 15 minutes later the lights were gone and we went back to shooting our pellet guns around.

Here's what happened, light from Venus bounced off a weather ballon, and was distorted through a thermal pocket, causing the 'combat' of the lights.
