No right being in space, religion clouds the mind after all religion makes full grown men and women believe in a being they can't see or hear, this is irrational thinking at it's best.

I'm sure there is a screening process that weeds out the raving fanatics from the space program but what about mild religious wacko's who are good at hiding there true intentions, i can just see a accident in space and one of the crew members curls up into a little ball and starts praying to god for help when his fellow crew members need him to be cool headed about a situation.

I do think this is a good question actually. I know he might have phrased it a little inappropriately, but I think he raises a valid point. yes religion does make you look for answers to questions that aren't there. Or makes you think you have to believe in something because that is what you have been taught. Still religous people do make up a big percentage of our population. So sadly it being a democracy I guess we would have to allow them some representation too, even if we think them illogical people.

In the past, people have used science to understand why things are the way they are, and to try to understand things. There has always been a close link between religion and science, especially astronomy.
As for your comment: "all religion makes full grown men and women believe in a being they can't see or hear" - that is simply the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. We all believe in things we cannot see or hear!!!! And for every person who says there is no God because they can't see or hear him, there is a person who says the opposite.
Your ignorance is quite disturbing....Irrational thinking is thinking that science can explain everything. It cannot.....only fools will think otherwise...
and furthermore, I fail to see what will make a non-religious person more suitable for space than a religious one. That's religious discrimination....

. Astronautics is not a science. It is more of an engineering practice. Engineers only worry about the facts needed for the task at hand and only care about enough accuracy and precision to get close. Scientists like definitive answers. Engineers want to get close enough that a few adjustments get them to some physical goal.
. It is possible to argue that religious beliefs interfere with the ability to be a scientist. There is a definite conflict of philosophies. Engineering is pretty non-philosophical. It seeks a physical answer, not a metaphysical goal. It is possible to be religious and be a perfectly fine engineer. So being religious is not at odds with being an astronaut.

There has only been ONE astronaut that was a scientists. The rests were all military war mongers who flew F-14 and F-16, sometimes in Vietnam, before going into the space program.

But you cannot get any closer to God, than being in the heavens.
And MANY non religious astronauts have described the trip as a religious experience.

Umm..in general one of the greatest scientists and theorist Albert Einstein was very religious....and without a capacity for irrational thought...we would never have our greatest discoveries.
Besides if anything happened in space you wouldn't have time to pray.....you'd be dead.

In the South in the 60's, black people did not have the right to do certain things either. So if you want to discriminate against people, then I guess not. Personally I think you should respect others' beliefs and not discriminate.

It appears that the only person whose mind is clouded is you. Religion is NOT going to turn someone into a raving fanatic.

Religious people should not allowed to be politicians like our President because they always invoke their beliefs into how they govern (just like in Iran).

Religion has nothing to do with space exploration. Its all about human curiosity and fascination.
