The geocentric model was the earliest model of the solar system it feature the earth as the center of not only the solar system but the entire universe. Belief in this system was common in ancient Greece and was championed by both Aristotle and Ptolemy.

Some time later, in the 17th century, the heliocentric model of the solar system was proposed due to conceptual advances, this model was championed by Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler, and Isaac Newton, which led gradually to the acceptance of the idea that Earth moved round the Sun.

The accepted model of the solar system is heliocentric, although there are still modern proponents of the geocentric model.
