I totally agree with "Eggman" and "Quas" in that, we are (as a species) centuries away from being ready to meet another intelligent life-form. I am frequently ashamed of being a human being every time I turn on the news with our petty squabbling over borders, our obsession with killing each other over political and religious differences, etc...
I would be willing to bet anything that other intelligent races are quite aware of our existence but, they are deliberately keeping their distance because we are simply too immature to even bother with right now!!
If we are contacted anytime soon, it probably will be something like "War of the Worlds" or "Independence Day" from a race who thinks as little about our existence as we do!!

I have to agree with the first poster being that we are not ready in the least. Humans, as the person said, are petty, selfish, aggressive people by themselves and in large numbers, dangerous.
We fear the unknown and aliens at this day and age would represent the greatest unknown factor to our species, so I would not be surprised if we end up going on a killing spree - I would actually be disappointed if we all turned out to hold on the ideals of Star Trek's Federation
As for you saying "other inhabitants of our solar system," there is nothing to suggest that is factual, save for some microbes and fossils on Mars. A little far down the evolutionary ladder to actaully constitute intelligence on a Human scale.

First if "first contact" with another sentient life form ever did happen "first contact" would not be made on Earth due to the volatile nature of global politics, the most logical choice of venues would be aboard the alien vessel and it wouldn't be by a ton of politicians it would be a select few people chosen by vote within the United Nations. But in my opinion the very suspicious nature of the human race would win over and cause some kind of political incident and they would leave Earth offended some how.

If we made contact with another advanced civilization, the whole planet would go nuts. The movie Contact gives a pretty good view of what would happen. There would be riots, religious groups would be going crazy, and it would generally be pretty chaotic. Like the first poster said, I'd be ashamed to have an alien look at the human race.

No... absolutely not. I would be ashamed for a space-faring alien race to visit my planet and see my species. We are all a bunch of petty, boorish, selfish children who can't stop fighting amongst ourselves long enough to make a concerted effort to venture out into the stars... give us a couple more centuries and if we don't make ourselves extinct, then maybe.
