Actually, the Northern Lights are much more common in Canada than elsewhere, because the Earth's north magnetic pole is located in northern Canada. They are much less frequent in the Scandinavian countries because they are quite a bit farther away from the north magnetic pole.

Any where around the artic region, but actually, the US and Canada are current hot spots. The magnetic north pole is the center of auroral activity in our hemisphere and the north magnetic poles is currently moving away from the true north pole. It is moving around thru Canada tipped toward the United States by about 10 degrees.
But, it is solar activity that sets off the northern lights. Currently, the sun has been quiet, but it is "ginning-up" to begin another active cycle.
