Space is constantly expanding. where a given galaxy was when you wrote your question is where it is now. For one thing, this means that no matter which galaxy we are talking about, virtually all of the other galaxies are moving away from that galaxy. The universe has no "edge" as such. It also means that the galaxies are not moving away through space, they are moving away with space (with space being created between them), as space itself expands. Think of a loaf of unbaked raisin bread you've set in a warm place to rise. The raisins are like galaxies or clusters of galaxies, and the dough, space. As the dough rises, the raisins move farther apart, but they've moved with the dough as the dough expended, not through the dough.

A lot of crap answers here. First of all the universe is really expanding and all data shows that it is accelerating in that expansion. This means that the distances between galaxies is increasing at a faster and faster rate. Our definitions of time and length come from the speed of light which is a constant. This means that our definitions aren't changing but the universe is.

Space is a quantum entity so it cannot expand.
You can't expand an atom of hydrogen.
If you compress enough together then hydrogen will expand when you release what ever confines them.
The universe is the same.
After the first 30 billionths of a second when space came into existence,it was at it's maximum density, the emergence of matter began to diminish the density this will continue until the minimum density is reached and space will begin to go out of existence.

Depends on what speed you live at.

If you exist at the speed of time, then all things are static.

If you live faster than the speed of time then the Universe would appear to contract.

We live at the perceived expansion rate of the Universe to us, don't ask me how many kliks the expansion rate is, add on the Earths spin for 12 hours and subtract the spin for the other twelve. Give or take a wobble or two.

Maybe there is a creature that exists in time, able to accelerate and decelerate at will; then the Universal Space would change at will.

My head hurts now!.

Scientists have proved that the universe is expanding by using something called red-shift. Scientists use this to see if a galaxy is moving closer or further away from us, the more red there is the further away it is (i think) and as some galaxies are moving further away from us this shows that the universe must be expanding or the galaxies would be closer together not further apart

Length, time, and the universe are all dynamic due to the fact that each of those things can be different depending on location or relativity...

Its expanding, it has been since the big bang and will continue to do so until its destruction or the end of time, whichever comes first

The Universe is expanding continously because the big boom had so much energy that everything is still moving away from the center of the universe. where there is nothing except nothinginess.

There is a theory that it will expand so far, then begin to decrease in size until it returns back to the big bang, then starts all over again, over the course of billions of billions of "years". What ever no need to worry yet awhile. That is if you believe in all these theories. Perhaps it's all spinning round and round, until it disappears up it's own black hole.

It is really expanding. At least that is the current thinking by most scientists.
