An alternative strategy is to get a star-charting program, load the catalog you want to use, and click on the star. Cartes du Ciel is free and supports all the major catalogs. Understand that there are multiple star catalogs, and a given star will have a different designation in each catalog. Naked-eye stars may also have a Bayer letter, a Flamsteed number, and one or more traditional names.

Go to www.nasa.gov and then use their search engine for help on that.
