a few weeks ago there were more troops sent overseas here in VA. Somebody i know joined the army for the benifits. now hes freaking out and blaming Bush for his problems. Is it just me or when you join the army you go in knowing fully of the possible consequences? Don't complain when you recieve a notice letting you know you are being sent to war. Am i wrong?

No you are not wrong.

You think YOU'RE tired of hearing them complain?! ;)
Every one who joins during this time has no excuse for saying they didn't know! Get a grip. We are at war people, no matter how little our liberal media reports.

and by the way, the benefits ARE a huge blessing but they certainly aren't the main reason to join. There's always a flip side. ex: we are living in guest housing right now trying to find a place we can afford to live because the housing wait for our rank is almost two years and the people in the area have doubled rents because they know there is a large military contingent moving here. Free housing? Don't bet on it. It's not a given no matter what post you are at. All the "benefits" have ups and downs.

Nevertheless, even though hubby has been gone for over half our marriage and there have been days when I wanted out NOW it has been worth it.

Remind your friend that there are bigger things at stake than his comfort.

It was a very good weapon when it was used in the beginning years of the Vietnam War. The gun was extremely reliable and it used a 7.62 mm round the same as the AK-47 and it would stop somebody dead in their tracks. The only complaints were that it was very heavy and it had major recoil. Then colt introduced a gun that was lightweight and didn't have much recoil. This was the M16. Soldiers thought "Hey this solves my issues with this gun." And so it was replaced. The M14 is still used today as a long range weapon for Designated Marksmen. And most soldiers today wouldn't have experience with the M14 unless they are Vietnam War veterans. So basically to answer your question it was the heaviness and recoil.

No, you're correct. They are fully aware of the risks involved. However, when a war becomes obviously the wrong thing to do even to the Generals and soldiers fighting it, then they have a right to complain. It is the job of the Generals to tell the Commander in Chief if it is best to stay and fight or go and let a country settle it's own sectarian civil war.

The benefits are a "perk" of the military.

No, it's not just you; people who join the military are probably hoping they don't go to war, hoping instead to get the benefits without paying the price.

They should not complain when notice is received they are enroute to Iraq.

Too many Soldier complaints originate from the lack of not fully realizing just what they are signing-up for, or perhaps it would be known as the "head up your b*tt" syndrome.

Too many Soldiers nowadays have this syndrome; want the "bennies" without paying the price.

I am a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

I have never been in large organization that was perfect or had perfect employees. The Army is a very large organization.

While some Soldiers do not perform to standard, I believe it is commensurate to the level of productivity and job satisfaction with nearly any member or job in a large organization.

Obviously I am generalizing here.

I am not bothered by a complaint from time to time, I believe releasing stress and frustration in a healthy manner can be constructive.

I believe that when the time comes he will do what is expected of him, regardless of the externalization of his personal opinions.

I work at the CVSO Office.

I agree, I have seen alot of ppl come in now that our ARNG Brigade has been put on alert.

Some people really make themselves believe that they will never be sent over there. Recruiters are NOT allowed to tell you that you're NOT going over there.

The week after we were alerted, we had about 10 ppl come in. I live in a VERY small town.

All soldiers complain. It's a fact of life. I would tell the soldier to just do his job and then get out after his 4 years are up.

You are 100% correct. All military contracts and thouroughly explained to the person that signs it. I knew what I was getting myself into and everyone that I assist in getting into the Army also knows what they are getting into. I know this because I explain it to them. You're not wrong at all. If he joined thinking he wouldn't ever have to actually do his job than he wasn't thinking straight.
