a fan would not work because all it does it to circulate HOT air around.
i would suggest you to buy another portable AC. i work at fry's electronics and based on my experience, the brand SHARP, Toyotomi, and Amcor work best. sharp is top of the line and its super quiet. price range from 450-650. or u can go as low as $299 for the 7000 BTU made by Amana.
good luck

Where on earth are you that it's "reallly hot"?! It's only May! Unless you're outside of the US, that is...

If the temperature is below 100F, get a big floor fan on a pedestal (like 16-20 inch in diameter). I've lived in Thailand for a year and it'd be 85-90F at night and I'd just put the fan on medium and sleep under a comforter (not a sheet, an actual comforter)... keeps the mosquitos away. Almost no-one I knew in Thailand had A/C and they had kids anyway (which meant they were pregnant). Floor fans do a much better job at cooling you off than ceiling fans, in my experience.

If the temperature goes over 100F though than it's probably a good idea to get a window unit or hang out in a cool place during the day and sleep at a friend's house at night until the window unit is fixed. I don't agree with the people that said A/Cs are luxuries... in most of the US they are, but last summer our apartment was 86F despite running the (central) A/C 24/7... it'd have been 120F in here or so without it. That's not a luxury, people!

If it's hot make sure you drink enough, quite possibly a gallon a day... fans work better when you sweat a lot. In Thailand people shower 3 times a day btw (in winter only twice).

Fix it or buy a window unit. Being hot can be unhealthy for the baby and a wreck on a pregnant body. They only cost about $100 for a cheap small unit, that'll due until it's fixed or if that's all you can afford. It's a priority right now, so don't put it off. Until you go out and get one (this evening preferably) send her to a friends house to chill out (literally).

If you go throught the labor and expense of buying fans you'll pay nearly as much as you would for a cheap window unit and the fans won't even cool the house. Try walmart. You don't need to cool your whole apt/house just the main aread that your wife spends her time in.

Assuming you can't afford to repair or replace the old one, and that you are not renting...

Buy some fans, and despite someone's assertion that fans don't work because they just push hot air around... They do work! Yes, the air is hot, but it is *moving*, ever hear of a cool breeze on a hot day? The wind is the *exact* same temperature as the air around you, but because it is removing the air from around you, it feels cooler.

Use the other methods too...cool damp towels (take damp but not drippy towel and place in freezer for 1 hour, remove, allow to become "soft" again, and place across forhead, drape across shoulders, place at small of back, etc...work wonders. So does a nice long soak in a cool/warmish bath...just don't over do it - thermal shock can be dangerous, and yes, you can become hypothermic in hot weather (happened to me in a swimming pool in Jamaica years ago - despite warm water, and 30+C temperatures!).

Try to go to a place that is open 24 hours a day, like Wal*mart or other large shopping store. You should be able to spend a little while there. For night time you can take large towels and get then wet with water and lay them over your wife. The evaporation should cooler a little while she sleeps.

Can you afford at least a window air conditioner for your bedroom? She will be super uncomfortable if it gets too hot - do whatever you can to either fix your a/c or get a small one for the window to cool at least one room in your house. You will both be much much happier!

you can run her a cool bath that always helps or take her to the beach with some shade and let her lay half in the water and half in the sun or you could take her to your local shopping centre and hang out there for the hottest period of the day,you can also put wet towels in front of a fan

A good quick fix is hitting a pool!!, a cold shower, or hitting a store that is air conditioned, maybe a movie theater?

Get your ac fixed, buy fans, give her pop sickles, wet a cloth in cold water and wipe her face, arms, stomach, legs, and neck. So sorry.
