Weapons go back to rocks and sticks. Then bigger rocks and sticks. Then rocks launched by sticks ...
It's only the technology that has changed. The motivation stays the same: I want what you have, or you can't take what I have.

because hitting someone with a rock or a stick was too inefficient so they tied a rock to a stick which was the first mace, better than either the rock or stick alone. 5,000 years later we have nuclear weapons, way better than the rock tied to a stick.
On the other side of the coin the greatest leaps in medicine came as a result of war. Odd how death and destruction can have a positive side.
