Because that's what diplomats are supposed to do. Talk to each other.

Don't know but I am not happy with it. What was true for Pelosi is true for Rice as well. It only legitimizes a terrorist regime and I am sad that the adminstration did this.
I suppose the administration is trying to reach out to the other side of the isle with some sort of message, but as you know, Dems are completely usless backstabbers. Give em an inch they'll take that mile and then some.

The Bush administration wanted to complain to the Syrians that they were letting people cross the border into to Iraq.
The Bush administration is being hypocritical because they are now responsible for the Iraqi borders after disbanding the Iraqi army.

Because we have put ourselves in the unfortunate position of needing Syria's help in certain areas. To beef up security along their border, to be nice to Lebanon, to make nice with Israel, to not close their border to Iraqi civilians fleeing the violence (I think I read recently that there are 2 million Iraqi war refugees in Syria - about 1/8th of them are Christians).

My understanding of this is her relationship to James Baker and Bob Gates. It was recommended by the Baker-Hamilton commission that diplomatic relations be opened with Syria and Iran and I believe that they want to lay the ground work for the next presidential administration.

They always have been...its called backroom deals. Were talking to the IRANIANS as I'm typing this. "WE NEVER WILL NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS!" HA! All countries do it including the US. They say one thing to the public while deal in secret in the back room. MAN, how naive people can be sometimes to believe what any politician is saying is the truth.

IT'S HER JOB TO DO THIS. UNLIKE NANCY PELOSI THIS WAS AN INTERNATIONAL FORUM WHERE THERE WERE REPRESENTATIVES FROM ALL NATIONS IN THE REGION TO DISCUSS THE SITUATION IN IRAQ. NO GOING TO DAMASCUS LIKE PELOSI DID.

Its called Diplomacy. The Secretary of State is given the power to treat with other nations, that is not the case for the Speaker of the House.
