I'm reading "Beyond Oil and Gas: The Methanol Economy" by George Olah and two others in his research group at USC. Chapter 9 is titled "The Hydrogen Economy and Its Limitations."
1) We have a vast distribution network for gasoline and it is incompatible with hydrogen. So, an entire new distribution network would have to be established to parallel our oil & gas distribution. Who will pay for that? The oil companies?
2) Liquid hydrogen is a cryogenic liquid and is difficult to store. This makes for great difficulties which must be solved safely enough for millions and millions of cars to use hydrogen.
3) There are problems with storing compressed hydrogen like too little can be carried on board and absorption of hydrogen by the metal, which makes it brittle.
I think the hydrogen economy is far, far away and this makes it attractive to oil companies. They seize on the hydrogen economy, throw a little money its way and ignore working on other means of weaning us off oil.
Just my $0.05 (inflation, ya know)
