You note electricity more often in everyday life than books but the real qualitative change comes with the printing press. It changed completely the distribution of knowledge and information. Electricity only intesified situations that existed before. Industrialization, advanced communications and transport, night light, most things existed before electricity they just got better and easier.

First, electricity is not an invention, so the answer must be the printing press. Also, in response to an earlier comment that Gutenberg's printing press would not be useful without electricity, I must say that his printing press did not use electricity, so it would certainly still be useful.

Electricity. The Gutenberg press wasn't the only way writing could be mass produced, it was just the first to be invented. It's hard to imagine anything else taking the place of electricity. Of course electricity itself is more of a discovery than an invention. You really ought to compare Gutenberg's press to a specific tool for using electricity, such as the turbines used to create most of our power.

Electricity has had a more global and a larger array of impact throughout the world enabling other great minds and great inventions such as the computer. However the printing press helped spread knowledge and ideas on an equally large spand before the invention of the internet or computer...I can go on but I cant remember and list that much xD

The printing press was used first to translate the Bible into the common language of the people. Also, after electricity was invented insomnia started. I would have to say the printing press because knowledge is power, I actually think electricity has made us dumbed down, because today many people do not read like they used to.

The printing press. I can't imagine my life without a whole bunch of different things to read. Don't get me wrong, I love electricity, but the world all through the years has been communicating through symbols written on something. The printing press made written things accessible to everyone.

I'd have to go with the Gutenberg press. I could, and have (on a temp. basis) lived without electricity. I could not, however, live without lots of books.
