Which religion?
Anyway,
religion has provided its followers with reasons to hate, persecute and go to war.
From Joshua to Thuggee, from the Crusades to the Hussites, and Catholic vs Protestant from the Germany and France to England and Ireland.
Yes,
communities work well when the great majority accept a common basis of rules and customs, certainly. (Levi-Straus has noted this works even when the underlying beliefs have no objective basis, and coined the term "necessary myths" to denote where the effect of communal illusion can appear less harmful than divisive disputes about truth.)
But when exactly does "Don't rock the boat" become "Lie for the sake of peace"?

I think you can follow your belief system for moral things, but leave legal things to laws that are in place and don't try to "moralize" them.
If you don't believe in sex before marriage, don't do it. This doesn't give you the right to tell others not to. They have their own belief system.
Similarly, if you don't believe in same-gender marriage, don't do it. This doesn't give you the right to preach against the US Constitution, which states that all citizens should have the same rights, including the state-given rights that go with marriage, a state institution.
I love the person who said, "Religion should be like underwear - worn on the inside." [It wasn't me!]

the key word here is SHOULDN"T. Constantine started Christianity and he was a Pagan. Didn't you at least see the DaVinci Code. Then after seeing that go do deep research on religions. Adultery, according to biblical law is having sex with a married person, or a married person having sex outside the marrage. Just having sex with a person and both of you are not married is called fornication.

If you claim to be a religious person, you should follow the laws set by your religion no matter what our society has to say about it. Living in America you have to take into account that not everyone shares your religious beliefs that's why they tend to commit adultery.

I hate religion and will never follow it. It is used to control people and make the religious leaders strong in the pocket and in their social standings.

Hmm. As far as I know, most religions condemn pre-marital sex.
