The Treaty of Versailles was the treaty that ended World War I. It was extremely harsh towards the German people. It is true that Germany signed the treaty under protest, but even though hostilities had ended, the British were continuing their blockade of Germany, which resulted in death by starvation of numerous German people.
The Weimar Republic, which signed the treaty for Germany, was linked with the treaty and the humiliating terms of surrender, which gave the Nazi party the political ammunition they needed to seize power.
The treaty was pushed hard by France and Germany, and was contrary to what was specifically promised by those two countries to the U.S. It was for that reason that the U.S. legislature refused to ratify the treaty, even though Wilson desired for them to do so. He did not like the treaty either, but was blinded by his desire to see the League of Nations (a predecessor to the UN) come about. This was one of Wilson's biggest mistakes.

The Treaty of Versailles was signed at the end of WWI (1919). http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/FWWversailles.htm
Woodrow Wilson was the President of the US. He tried to get a Republican Congress to verify it, but they refused. The US was becoming under the complete control of Republicans. Isolationism was taking over. Wilson died and Republicans took over for the next 12 years. Hitler took over Germany. It was made to be an easy task, because the German people hated having to make the reparation payments to the Allies in Europe. The US embargoed German goods and drove Germany into a depression. The German people were desperate and starving by the time Hitler was appointed Chancellor in 1932. This war can be totally blamed on the Republicans. Had they signed the Treaty, and not embargoed German goods, Hitler would probably not have become so popular.
That 12 year Republican reign ran the US straight into "The Great Depression of 1929." It took a Democrat, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as President to get us out of it and lead us through WWII.

It wasn't WW2 it was at the end of WW1 and it made the Germans pay reparations to the victors for the cost of the first world war and ultimately led to germany becoming bankrupt and Hitler into power.
