Dogs should ONLY be bred to benefit the breed as a whole.

Only dogs with extraordinarily good characteristics and are excellent representatives of their breed should ever be considered.

And these traits must be /proven/, either by championships in kennel club conformation competitions or, in the case of working / herding / etc dogs, via performance championships in herding trials, field trials, sledding races, etc.

Any dogs displaying traits unfit for breeding should be sterilized and sold under 'pet only' contracts.

No other dogs should be bred.

/Especially/ not these mixed-breed mutts labeled as 'designer dogs' or results of careless, backyard breeding. It's not that mutts are not good dogs, it's just that there are /too many/ of them already bred and desperate for homes to justify creating more of them to populate shelters.

And NO dog with any history of genetic defects or has tested positive for any genetic disorders (hip dysplasia, CEA, etc) should EVER be bred.

ONLY for the betterment of the breed, and ONLY by people knowledgeable enough to breed responsibly. The responsibility of breeders is to produce puppies of sound body and mind, free of genetic defects.
Personally, I will not breed any dog that does not have at least one title proving competence in either performance or conformation. Titled dogs are PROOF that the dog is sound, trainable, and suitable for a family pet.
Money has nothing to do with good breeding practices. If I were to add up the money I've made breeding vs. the money I've spent in training and exhibiting, vet bills and food, I'm quite certain I'd be 10s of thousands in the hole. It's all worthwhile when a pet owner comes back for a second or third dog of your breeding because the dogs they've bought previously were so wonderful. THAT is what good breeding is all about.

The ONLY reason a dog should be bred is to produce a WORKING quality dog. Everything else is secondary. Now, I need to qualify that statement. Temperament first, nerves of steel, handler hardness, total enviromental security, things like that. Nothing upsets me more then when I read here things like, "My dog will not walk on carpet, wood floors, etc" "My dog is shy". Why do you think all these things happen? Because people breed for the "Standard" first. The standard of what? LOOKS. Looks are not what will make a dog function in the every day world, temperament will. Looks are not what's needed during training when you give a correction and the dog shuts down for a week, handler hardness is. All dogs should be able to do what they were originally bred to do, whatever that is. That is the ONLY reason to breed, to produce sound dogs that can function. Imagine a world where everyone owned a dog like that? WOW!!!!!!!!!

Lots of people will breed for lots of different reasons. The biggest reason NOT to breed is the fast buck. This includes things like breeding for a specific color because they sell for a higher price than other colors. When you breed only for color, the rest of the dog is on a downhill slide. Breed for the entire package and let the color take care of itself .
IMHO The biggest challenge to dogs at this time is the "designer dog" fad. The ONLY reason for the breeding of "whateverpoos" is to scam the general public out of a little (sometimes a lot of) cash. The dogs fill no purpose what so ever. This makes breeding designer dogs our worse form of puppy mill.

Certainly successful at SOMETHING besides the undemanding job of pet. Certainly I would consider a preformance titled dog to be a potential breeding candidate. In many breeds the field dogs are an entirely different bloodline as the show lines, and a FCH can be harder to get that a show champ (my breed has about 200 AKC show champ a year and 25 AKC field champs)
Even a show dog who has not QUITE even hit the full 15 points might have potential. But one that never went out and was evaluated against the best of other kennels - I have a problem....

I don't show dogs. I believe a dog should have a purpose in life instead of just "looking good".
I breed Great Pyrenees and sells to farms as livestock guardian dogs. They are also excellent companion dogs and very gentle with children. They are large, but that's just more to love.
Remember, dog spelled backword is God. Unconditional love. And it's true, all dogs go to Heaven.

If NO one continues the breeds they become EXTINCT !!!

Even though you all *think* that will never happen you are very wrong.

There are breeds that have less than 15 litters a year. That is right the Sealyham terrier averages 15 litters a year. Wipe at the hobby breeders n California and you wipe out half the sealyhams in the country. EXTINCT from dwindling gene pools.

Consequently all this overpopulation nonsense in PROPAGANDA

Go to the link below and read the charts.. Learn something don't just repeat what a bunch of Vegans are telling you

Not necessarily. Many breeders will chew your head off if you want to breed your dogs which might not be perfect. It's like they want to selfishly be the only breeders out there. I am going to breed my Shelties no matter what anyone says. The male is show quality, the female is not. They both are very friendly and extremely intelligent. A lot of Sheltie breeders breed dogs because they like the way they look and they have horrible personalities. This has caused A LOT of Shelties to be extremely shy and many people give them away due to this. Also, many breeders of dogs are strictly in it for the money. I think if you have 2 AKC dogs who have wonderful personalities and atleast look the standard (they DO NOT have to be champions) and you know people who would want their pups beforehand and you have the time, money and LOVE to take care of a litter, GO FOR IT! These selfish breeders need to back off. I know atleast 14 families whose #'s I've taken that would want my pups because my Shelties are not only adorable but SUPER SMART (in agility and obedience) and SUPER FRIENDLY and would make wonderful family dogs, competition dogs or possibly be show dogs. People should breed dogs because they love the breed but should not breed dogs that don't remotely look like the breed should. Does that make sense? And ignore those people who say "THERE ARE PLENTY OF UNWANTED PUPPIES AND DOGS IN THE SHELTERS!" That's true but very few are AKC.

Everyone in here will tell you that your dog should have been shown or champion blood line. I don't agree with this. Champion blood lines can cost someone thousand and thousand of dollars. Not everyone can afford that. This is where breeders like me come in. Mine... by all means don't look like what you see on tv. But mine are healthy and cute as a button. I am in good standing with AKC, all my dogs are DNA tested and enrolled in a care program with AKC. Micro Chip. I breed for the love of the Shih TZu and a promise I made to a Shih Tzu that was dying in my arms after I save her from a breeder farm. I promise her I would breed Shih Tzu and do it right. I didn't go into this blindly.. I have ever book there is on Shih Tzu, I work with a breeder for a year before I even got into breeding these wonderful dogs. I state in my contract that for any reason they can no longer keep the dog that dog is to come back to me. I keep in touch with everyone that buys a puppy from me. My responsibility don't end when I sale a puppy.

The champion ship dogs are very well cared for, but they can't feel carpet under their feet for feet it will cut their hair. They will never know what it is like to go out chasing butterflies or pounce on a flower that was blowing in the wind. My dogs can do that. I have had them come in with mud from head to toe. But they clean up well lol.

No, my dogs never won anything..But the love they give someone makes up for any awards in my opinion. I am not a back yard breeder my vet can tell you that much. I am just a breeder for some one who would love to give love to a little Shih Tzu and not have to pay thousand of dollars for. I have homes for my puppies before I breed my female. I have my own studs because I want to know what is going on with them. I have people come to my house all the time just to play around with my dogs..It gives them a chance to see if this is the type of dog they want. I know this may not answer your question but I just wanted to say why I breed Shih Tzu's

Yes, both dogs should be winning show dogs, and have papers, and the owner must know what they are doing. Even then I would advise against it. Just think, for every little beautiful life you bring into this world there is another equally beautiful life that is put in a gas chamber, or given the eternal sleepy shot. For every life you create you kill another. Do you want all those deaths on your head?
