I know this may sound crazy, but I have a friend who actually declawed her own cat, and funny enough, the cat is doing fine and not destroying her furniture anymore. My friend has not gone to vet school or had any previous training and her feline friend is doing just fine. I am just wondering if this would be the best alternative since I don't have quite enough money to get Whiskers declawed. She explained to me how she uses a certain sedative so Whiskers does not feel anything, and uses peroxide to prevent any infection. Her cat honestly looks fine, and I am thinking about asking her if she would not mind allowing me to watch Whiskers get declawed, and then I can perform the surgery on my other cats.

They now have a more humane way of doing that. There are these little rubber things you can buy. They're in the shape of the cats claws and you just glue them over the claws Works just as well as declawin em.

THe best way is TO NOT DO IT!!! It does hurt no matter what you do. Imagine if someone cut off the tip of each of your fingers, no pain killer could take that away. You can buy claw caps if you are worried about your cat destroying the furniture. Declawing leads to behovior problems. If your cat goes or veven gets outside it has no way to defend itself. I don't think your friend should even own a cat! That is horrible! Do not declaw your own cats. There are alternatives to declawing. Most vets won't even do it because it is so painful and stressful for the cat.

Here are some sites with alternatives to declawing

do not get her declawed. well cats are suppose to have claws...... Declawing is a surgery not something you should try at home... Try getting your cats a couple scratching post.... You didnt mention anything in the description that said your cats scratch the furniture, A cat CAN be trained not to scratch furniture and carpet, they need to be taught that they are to use the scratching post.. I HAVE A GOOD IDEA.... Try taking an old piece of carpet and hanging in a least noticable spot see if you can train your cat to use the hanging carpet instead of the furniture

I hope this helps
please do not try it your self.....
do not declaw the cat it doesnt seem right...
you can buy a book or ask a vet the best way to train a cat not to scratch and to use a post.....

Good luck!!!

What did she do to that poor cat? Self-declawing a cat is abuse, can get you in trouble with the law and/or Animal Control, and is dangerous to the health of the cat.

If you REALLY want to have the cat declawed, take it to the vet-- there is NOTHING good or safe about doing it yourself!!

If you want to use those nail caps (Soft Paws) use the glue Sparingly and Replace the Soft Paws at intervals that the instructions tell you to do -- NOT following those instructions can cause a major infection in the cat's paws.

I would have a vet do it . I would not let a person do it if they don't know what they are doing. The next cat I get I would never get a cat declawed again because my cat had problems when she had it done it did not heal right. She had to have 2 surgeries.

Errrrrrmm.....No offense to you or your friend, but I'd defiantly not do that. Your friends cat is just VERY fortunate. There are MANY things that can go wrong. Including giving your kitty too much sedative.

If you can't afford getting your cat declawed I'd suggest wait until you have saved enough money(although I personally think that it is kinda mean to have your cat declawed).

Or you can get softpaws (or are they called softclaws?) anyway, they're like fake non-sharp 'nails' that you glue onto your kitties claws. They're very humane and pretty cheap too. You can even get colors! You could also just teach kitty to use a scratching post so she files her nails down (or just clip her nails often).

I doubt your friend was able to declaw her cat herself. Declawing involves removing the last bone from each toe since the nail is so embedded into that bone. There is no other way to remove the nail AND keep it from growing back. All your friend did was horrifically torture and abuse her cat, and the nails will grow back anyway. She should be arrested.

Declawing is inhumane and should never be done. It's for lazy people who don't want to put the effort into training and trimming nails properly.

This is considered animal cruelty and your friend will be arrested when reported.

Only a qualified vet can perform he declawing surgery, which is inhumane and unnecessary to begin with!

It's horrible. Don't do it. With a bit of patience and a scratching post, you can prevent your cat from scratching furniture.

first of all... declawing your cat is very very bad... if for any reason the cat ever got out, it would not be able to escape up trees etc or defend itself.. but for god sakes if you are going ot have it done go to a vet! think about having your fingernails torn off while "using a certain sedative" and if you think you would be "honestly fine" afterward than ok... but as someone who lost all of her fingernails, it hurts a LOT and its cruel...

I personally think its very cruel and unusual to declaw a cat. Imagine having your fingernails ripped out... probably not a very great feeling. If you want to do something like that to a poor helpless animal, you have no business owning for one. If you love your cat, you won't do that to it. Its just not natural. Not trying to be rude, just speaking my mind, sorry if it offended you.
