Always called them thongs growing up in TX- perhaps it is a regional term, like pop, soda, etc.

It's largely generational.
In the US, at any rate, "flip flops" were called "thongs" long before the underwear came into the picture.
I probably say "flip flops" more often than I say "thongs" now, when referring to the footwear. But 1) it took me a long time to get to that point and 2) I might be saying "flip flops" but I'm *thinking* "thongs".
The definition of "thong" is a strip of material, usually leather, used to secure or fasten something. Hence the use of the word "thong" to describe the footwear. And, later, the underwear.

Interesting how "generational changes" include changes in the meanings of words.
"Thongs used to be (and still can be) a shoe with "thongs" of leather or rubber.
when worn they "Flip" and "flop". So either os correct.
Now the BIg problem comes in when "Thongs" meaning single string underwear are forced onto a large body, and thus become "Flip Flops"..

You must be fairly young. Before thongs, the under ware, became so mainstream, flip flops were called thongs.

I think it is older white people that refer to them as thongs. Everyone else I have heard refers to them as flip flops or flops.
