I drink a lot of orange juice and orange juice is tremendously high in vitamin C, I think it really boosts my immune system. The body typically gets enough vitamin C that you don't need to suppliment it with vitamin C tablets, but increased calcium and vitamin C will lead to stronger bones and stronger bones will lead to increased health, expecially long term. I don't think your physiology teacher is qualified enough to state that vitamin C doesn't boost your immune system, to be able to say that you would have to understand how it directly and indirectly affects every cell in your body and doctors don't even know all effects, expecially since no two bodies are the same. I see a lot of people write down stuff their instructors tell them, and I can honestly say a lot of these instructors have no business giving out such advice, some shouldn't even be teaching with some of their views they have.

It's a whole lot more than the RDA. I take vitamin C crystals (potent powder form). If you take too much you'll get the runs. So if I feel something coming on I will take some every few hours until I'm almost to that point. I have noticed if I take a lot, I have a little skin outbreaks, but nothing major.

The new RDA has been increased by 30% for men to 90 mg per day, and by 16% for women to 75 mg per day. Smokers need an additional 35 mg per day. For the first time, maximum levels for Vitamin C have also been set. For adults, the upper level of Vitamin C is 2,000 mg per day.

Dr. Linus Pauling , two times Nobel Laureate and "father of Vitamin C", postulated the benefits and promoted high intakes of Vitamin C for decades. As early as the late 1960s, he started taking 2,000-3,000 mg of Vitamin C a day. Dr. Pauling was way ahead of his times. As the years went by, he increased his Vitamin C intake progressively until the early 1990s, in the latter years of his life, when he was taking as much as 18,000 mg a day. He died at the age of 93 and attributed the last 12 years of his life to his high Vitamin C intake.

You can't take more than 10,000 units. It will cause you damage. Some people feel that going to 3000 units is good, but be aware that it will play havoc with your intestines. Go up slowly.

Also, the vitamin C in fresh oranges and grapefruit actually works better than supplements. I personally don't bother with supplements except during certain times of the year (Vit. B complex experiment to reduce incidence of bronchitis). I eat plenty of fruit/vegetables and hardly ever get sick.
