This is going to be a two-part question actually. Here is what I have: 1 Fantail, 1 Oranda, in a 10 gal aquarium. I know it's time to up-grade to a larger aquarium. I eventually want to add to them 2 Lionheads. What size aquarium do you recommend? I'm thinking a minimum 55 gallon.

And, if that is the case ~ does anyone out there know how much a 55 gallon weighs when it is full of water? We are moving to a different house in the next month or so and I want to get an idea of how much actual weight I'm looking at.

8.35 (rounded off ) pounds. so 459 1/2 pounds

(To be exact 8.35404487293294 per gallon and 459.472468 pounds)

This does not take into consideration gravel and decorations, however you have to give for water displacement. Equals out pretty much. Guess on 459 or 460 for the weight + stand

A 55 will be fine for all four fish to live healthy and together.

Good luck with your fish.

To answer the weight part of the question, a gallon of water weighs about eight pounds, so a 55 gallon tank'll weigh 440lbs in water alone. This doesn't include the tank itself, the gravel, or the equipment, so you're looking at about 500-600 lbs total.

A 55 gallon is pretty lare. Usually fish grow only to the size of their habitat. So I wouldn't worry about getting them into the 55 gallon until you are all moved and settled in. Being thown into a whole new environment can be stressful to fish, so you should wait until you are set up and won't have to move them again.

A very, very general rule of thumb is to allow 10 pounds per gallon for a filled and decorated tank. That doesn't generally include the weight of a stand.

With proper filtration a 55 gallon should make a great tank for 4 goldfish.

a pound of liquid weighs 8 # so the math is 8x55=440# + weight of tank and extras? 500# give or take. 55 gal for 4 fish seems like overkill? My opinion! Good Luck..><>:)

FISH DO NOT GROW TO THE SIZE OF THEIR ENVIRONMENT!!!!!!!!!

when a fish"grows to its environment" you are stunting it. this is extremely bad and can cause deformaties and desiese. this is NOT good. many people believe this and i HATE it! it is cruel to the fish because the owner prolly thought that it was pretty so they bought it.

I am glad that you decided to up grade. that is what a responsible fish owner would doo. congrats.
