You know what dude, forget what others might say on the subject of using vista... its awsome, I been using it since the day it came out publicly, and sure, Iv had my share of problims, but as an active user, I have seen many of the problims fixed fast, sure, I couldnt use my printer for the first two weeks, but hell, the only thing I print off is reports for school, so instead I just saved it to my jump drive, found out doing it that way it also saved me ink and paper... lol
Oh and as far as installing it, you should be able to take it back, and have the place you bought it from tell you all your info for it, or have them exchange it, also, there are many more cheating (some would call them "illegal") was of stoping the timer after you install vista, just look it up, I cant tell you where, but im sure you wont have to look to hard for it.. to install vista with out a key, just start installing like you wold any other time (boot into the cd on start up) start installing, and when you get to the part where you have to enter the key, just unclick the "automatically reg. when connected to the internet" or what ever it says, leave the key blank, and click next, a box will pop up asking if you want to continue, just click what you want, shouldnt be too hard to figure out, and once you install with out the key, you have 30 days to play around, register, or find thetimer stop thing I mentioned...
Edit: Just so you know, and I forgot to mention it, its olmost impossible to get a virus unless your a complete idiot, aany one who has used vista for a good time knows that basically you have to install it your self, basically, although it could get kinda irratating, vista asks permission to install basically everything, so you have to say ok go and install that virus so it can tottally **** up my machine!! whoohoooo! lol yea..

Why are you doing this a perfectly good piece of
hardware? Vista is slower and has more memory
requirements than its predecessors, and they really
haven't fixed most of the viri or spyware vulnerabilities.
If you really want to do this, you should be able to go
back to the shop where you purchased it and obtain
the information.
However, I recommend replacing
it with one of:
http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org
Any of these will be more reliable, less susceptible to
viri, uses your hardware more efficiently, and they're
all free.

Return it if it does not have an authentication code; it is an illegal copy. Then report the shop to the police and Microsoft.
