Puerto Rico is a US possession which gives them the benefits of statehood without the obligation to have a symbiotic relationship with the US. ie Two soldiers serving in Iraq one was born in Texas one was born in PR. Both the same rank, both served for the same number of years, both have a wife and three kids. The soldier from PR makes more money....

PR is a commonwelth of the US. It's the peoples' choice to vote for statehood or remain the same. As for the soldier from PR making more money, you weren't specific as to the rank of both. The one with more stripes, more time in grade, specialty service, makes more money.

All U.S. terroritories historically voted for or against statehood. Every U.S. state was originally a territory. There has been voting for statehood in Puerto Rico, but the voters turned it down.

U.S. is not going to force Puerto Rico to become a state because by doing that, U.S. would have to spend lots and lots of money to support them. if you do some research you would find that Puertoricans are 3rd world citizens with U.S. passports. there is also a lot of violence and hard drug dealing that the U.S. prefers to support them partially than 100%.

Is Puerto Rico on for the free ride? Well all jokes aside, there are no taxes there, and tourism is abundant.

Also, why do not the commonwealths have a represenative/senator?

im not sure why there not if it was up to me id give them a choice become a state or stop enjoying all the luxuaries of being assiociated with the U.S. i mean heck its a tax haven for people not wanting to pay taxes i mean i pay taxes in the army and my paycheck comes from taxes so why arnt they
