The only true way to learn about other cultures and races is to spend time in their home. TV is all Euro-centric. It is written almost exclusively by Europeans and even if it is written by another culture it is edited to please a European audience. Until you have sit down to dinner with someone of another culture, you really will not know. And even that only starts the process. I thought I had a good understanding of Pakistani culture as most of my Friends (sister and brothers) in my community are Pakistani as well as my husband. But it took a trip to Pakistan to truly understand the "why" instead of just the "what" of the culture. TV is rarely an accurate description of the beauty of other cultures. It is just the producers view of that culture.

I learn about other races and cultures by actually speaking to people of other races and cultures. And no you don't have to bombard people w/ silly questions to learn. You can LISTEN and you will learn a lot about someones culture and their individual self. TV exploits too many stereotypes for the American public or the world in general to get an accurate portrayal of different cultures/ races.

Nope I formed my opinions by dealing with other races in every day situations. I have also learned that stereotypes exist for a reason and not just to save time.

If you count things like documentaries then yes I guess that is part of the way I learn about other races and cultures
but that's not my only way of learning about people. there's reading and the most important actually meeting and talking to people of different backgrounds then me.

I have traveled the world a bit. No the television images are just too flat. Other countries have just as many dimensions as we do, but T.V. just shows them rich, or poor, or black, or white, what ever, but never the true image of other nations.

I learn from a mixture of television, personal friendships, history, and random encounters with people in public.
I try to keep an open mind and practice tolerance in all instances.

No, I don't learn from TV. I really don't watch that much television.
I was an Army brat for 18 yrs., so moving around so much, I learned from just being around so many different people.
