Currently it is voluntary. However, all men upon reaching age 18 must register for a draft, in case it becomes necessary to call them into service.

A draft, in the US, is used during wartime when troop levels must be augmented quickly. The military can call up citizens to be trained as soldiers.

This is not an easy question to anwer. According to the United States Selective Service (Draft Board)

If you are a man ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S., then you must register with Selective Service. It’s the law. You can register at any U.S. Post Office and do not need a social security number. When you do obtain a social security number, let Selective Service know. Provide a copy of your new social security number card; include your complete name, date of birth, Selective Service registration number, and current mailing address; and mail to the Selective Service System, P.O. Box 94636, Palatine, IL 60094-4636.

This pool of registrants gives the US a resource to draw upon should a military draft be necessary. At this time there is no draft and enlistment into the US Armed Forces is strictly voluntary.
In simple words as long as voluneers keep up the required numbers service is voluntary . If these numbers are not reached then a military draft is possible.

This would be an interesting court case to see if the law is discriminatory as it specifies only 'males" must register which sounds like sexual discrimination to me.

The military is all voluntary (sort of). Conscription is still easily available because it is manditory for all males to register with the selective service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. In the event that we needed to draft a militia we retain the pool.

Don't worry about that though. There won't be a draft. If there were a draft children of privilege would have the same duty to serve as those in the working class. For every Pat Tillman there are 9,999 guys like you and me for whom the choice to leave a multi-million dollar a year job to serve our country simply isn't there. Most of our volunteers are fighting a war that was supposed to be preemptive (remember that?!?) because other Tillman-esqe opportunities in their life had been, well, preempted.

Register for the selective service at your local post office. Don't sweat a reinstatement of the draft. It isn't happening. There is simply no way that the @ssholes who got us into this war are going to roll the dice with their own children.

"take the US military service?" You mean enter the military? It's all volunteer nowadays. There hasn't been a draft since Vietnam.

There is a "selective service" registration, which is just a huge database of all able-bodied males between 18 and 26. That's just information though. In order to institute a draft, congress would have to change the law.

It's been voluntary ever since they repealed the draft back around 1970.

Voluntary. Well, unless they re-invoke the draft.

Its voluntary but recruiters make a commission just like a furniture salesman, so they really push people that show the slightest interest.
