Anitoli Kalashnikov 47 7.62x 39 124 grain projectile, lower muzzle velocity, shorter range accuracy by a little, probably due to gun manufacture, and lighter loaded shell. knockdown power is greater than m-16.
M-16 is .223 cal. good muzzle velocity, fair range, small projectile only about 50 grains. not a lot of force on impact light knock down power.

There appears to be some confusion here between the 5.45mm AK-74 and the 7.62mm AKM (and AK-47).
The 5.45mm round out of the AK-74's roughly 16" barrel has about the same muzzle velocity and power as the 5.56mm round (depending on exact type) out of the M4's 14.5" barrel.
So, according to physics, there is unlikely to be a significant difference between the two rounds ballistically.
As far as wound production, Russian (Soviet) 5.45mm rounds are designed with an air pocket in the tip, and a core design to make the bullet tumble.
The US issue semi-armor piercing M855 Ball tends to yaw (rotate) when it hits soft tissue and fragment about 2/3 down the length at higher velocities.
The Russian round, in studies, has been criticized as being no more powerful than a handgun round unless the liver is hit. The US round, however, has a reasonable reputation at short ranges but also a questionably level of stopping power at range.
So, the answer is probably the US round by not a lot.

First thing, the AK-47 is more powerful. in 2003 my patrol team actually carried some due to the fact it will penetrate an engine block and an M-16 will not. About the Accuracy of the AK it depends on where it was made. the Egyptian Ak is heavier and more accurate than the russian and chinese made versions. But I will not not argue the fact the M-16 is more accurate but the Ak will always be more powerful

The AK74 is not the same gun as the AK47... it is the russian response to the US 5.56mm. It is actually 5.45 mm and slightly less powerfull then the 5.56 although the desighn is the same as the 47, so the carbine would be more powerful.

Well the AK uses a larger projectile and also carries more energy, So I would say the Ak is more powerful. As far as accuracy goes, M-16 is far superior.

both have the almost the same ballistic..the m4 uses 5.56x45mm while the AK74 use 5.54x39mm the M4 has better accuracy but the AK74 is more reliable..either way they both will kill you dead..I would go with the AK..I like reliability any day..
