By California law, they are to be in a car seat until 3 years old and 30lbs (rear facing until 1yr and 20lbs) and then they must be in either a car seat or a booster until 6yrs and 60lbs, but they recommend to continue using a booster until 8yrs and 80lbs. Many car seats and boosters go up to 100lbs, so could be used all the way until about 10-11yrs old. But by law they must be no less than 6yrs old and must weigh at least 60lbs. Different states varies slightly, here is a link with the different requirements.

A child needs to be in a car seat until they are 4 years old in the state of Pennsylvania. From 4-8 a booster seat. I know there are more specifics to this such as the infant facing backwards rule as well as height and weight specifics but I can't seem to find them at the moment. I think the rear facing seat is something like btwn 9 months - a year or until the child can sit upright on their own. I do recall something being stated to the affect to be out of a car/booster seat the child needs to be able to sit comfortably in the seat with the knees being able to be bent properly over the edge of the seat as well as the seat/shoulder belt resting properly on the child.
I hope this helps a little.

The laws vary by state. You can check with your local police to be safe. But most car seatbelts don't fit on anyone under 4' 9" properly. My son is 7 and still sits in a booster seat. he is over 4 tall it isn't really inforced at his age but i don't want the seat belt sliding off him and him flying around if we get in an accident. They are about $20 at walmart bite the bullet for safety.

In NC, it's 8 and 8 pounds (nor "or" but "and") and they must ride in the backseat until age 12 or 14. They can go into a booster around 40-50 pounds.

Check your state guidelines. Your child can get killed or (less importantly than that, of course) you can get ticketed if you miss on this one.

In Canada they need to be in a booster seat till 80 lbs or age 8. I don't think it's worth the risk to stop before then, kids are to special.

They have to be 4 feet 9 inches to not have a car seat or booster seat. It is a law.

It depends where you live. Different states have different age/weight requirements.

In california it is up until age 6 or 60 pounds, and I am using the term carseat loosely to include boosters.

It isn't based on age, but weight and height requirements are what you should go by. Usually it's around 50 pounds...the car seat manufacturer will have the size listed on the box.
