A midwife.
They go to school SPECIFICALLY for women, pregnancy and childbirth. Doctors go to school for people in general. I'd rather have someone who is specifically educated in this area than a "jack-of-all-trades" sort. Midwives statistically have a way lower rate of women who end up having any kinds of complications or medication. (including C-sections). They are more personable, take their time during appointments, and are very holistic and natural. You will never find a better person to help you with breastfeeding!
I love my midwife!!!

A professional midwife is great, if you would like to have a natural birth with professional help. Midwifes are usually a little bit more natural (no medication, etc) and know a lot more tricks. Nevertheless it is goog to have a doctor around. So if you are able to have a midwife in a hospital that would be great, in case you or your baby need the help of a doctor he will be close by.

I had a midwife. I really enjoyed the experience. Doctors are usually more stringent in the process of birthing. Midwives are allowed more freedoms as in water births, squating etc. If it makes the mom more comfortable and easier for her this way lets do it was my midwifes moto. I was able to stand in a shower for 2 hours and she did her tests right there. Not many docs would let you do that. Another nice thing about CNM (certified nurse midwifes) is that they do have a doctor backup in the case of problems such as breech deliveries, c-sections etc. either way you go you get the doctor if necessary. One other reason i went with a midwife is because i was more at ease with her. she had kids she knew what was going on and how i felt so i was alot more at ease with her prenatel and post.
I did end up with the doctor delivering me but my midwife was there. It is basically just up to you and your personal views and comfort zones.

I had a doctor and very glad I did. I was very over due and had complications and my doctor (obgyn) was able to hook a monitor up to my baby while he was in the birth canal, this way he knew if my son was in danger. Thank God he did, we were starting to loose my son because he was stuck, if not for this technology he would have died. Now, I am not bashing Mid wife's, it just the lack of technology in case of an emergency that would scare me. If you are having a no risk pregnancy and there is a 100 percent guarantee that you can have this baby naturally (which can tear you apart) then go for it. BUT if there is a chance you may have problems, then I say, get a doctor and be prepared.
There are classes in almost every city that will help you as far as learning what to expect during child birth, you can get movies, books and learn about it via Internet.....BUT, every child birth is different and anything can happen.
It is the most beautiful thing in the whole world, and any pain that you have ever felt goes completely away the very moment you see and hold that baby for the first time. So no matter what you choose, it will be the right thing for you as soon as you have that baby.
Good luck to you and god bless!

I just had a little one 6 weeks ago and can say from experience that I prefer a doctor. Throughout my pregnancy I saw midwifes because I believed that they were more sincere and had better techniques to use so there was less pain medicine to rely on. Towards the end of my pregnancy and then in the week I was overdue I came to dislike midwifes. They did not seem to care about my discomfort and continued to say that they don't induce only doctors do... Well, needless to say I was overdue and was carrying a big baby so I was scheduled for a C-Section. I did not make it to the scheduled date because I went into labor and the midwife let me labor for 14 hours before finally agreeing with me and letting me have the C-Section. I then had the best care from my doctor...

When i first found out i was pregnant i was 15. I didnt care if i had a midwife or a doctor. i just wanted to always know the baby was going to be fine. I ended up having a doctor the first two trimesters and it was ok!! when i got closer to delivery i really wanted to have a midwife. I heard they helped with everything so i got one. My midwife was awsome. She helped check on the baby a lot! She got me enrolled in classes and when it came to delivery she helped me relax, breathe, and push!! Midwifes i believe are a lot more helpful and easier to get along with than doctors.. I would strongly recommend a midwife if you are going to have a baby and like to talk to someone about things going on!!

A doctor. Reason?: A doctor is medically trained more than a midwife. In case of emergency for anything in pregnancy, birth, a doctor is available in the emergency room (as needed) or birthing room, where needed. There is always a backup. Plus, if you have a boy and want him circumcised, it can bedone in the hospital where born, the next day. There are nurses there to help you with breastfeeding, etc. Especially if it's a first birth. In case of complications, etc. I was glad to have my child in a hospital, with a dr., and nurses. They are so well trained, and the experience is good. And, these days, you can have the baby in your room with you. Security is usually there, with matching wrist bands, etc., so it's pretty good. Take care.

It didn't matter to us because we had two natural childbirths (no drugs). We knew what we were doing. However, we did both in a hospital with doctors and nurses there to help, monitor the situation, and do something if things went wrong.

I have had experiences with both. I think that midwives are too relaxed and doctors do too many routine procedures, so if I ever got pregnant again I would go with the midwives who deliver at the hospital.

Midwife
Midwife works with you and is attentive
Doctors it's all about routine intervention and authority and superiorority: not conducive to child-birth for me
