Sex-linked diseases are inherited through one of the "sex chromosomes" -- the X or Y chromosomes. Autosomally inherited diseases are inherited through the non-sex chromosomes (autosomes), pairs 1 through 22.

A sex linked disease is not referring to an STD. In genetics it refers to a disease that is inherited on the sex chromosomes. For example, color blindness is much more common in males because the gene for color blindness resides on the X chromosome (a sex chromosome)....males have only one X chromosome. Color blindness is a recessive disorder which means that two recessive alleles of the gene are required for the disorder in females, but only one in males (since they only have one X chromosome, the other is a Y) It therefore only requires a single dose of the recessive gene in males and a double dose in females making it much more common in males.....
This is only one example, there are many more!

It is a disease that is genetically linked to one sex or the other.
It is NOT the same as a sexually transmitted disease---that is a disease you get from sexual contact. A sex-linked disease (or trait) is passed to a child from its parent, and is carried on either the X or Y chromosome. Hemophilia is one example.
