It depends on what type of insurance you have most of the time. If you were in the military they don't tell you the babies sex at all, because it's not "medically necessary."

I found out at my 21.5 week sonogram. However, I received the sonogram to do all the measurements and necessary scans of the fetus...they just told me the gender because they happened to see it on the screen while they were measuring. They didn't do the sonogram just to determine gender. It certainly is not medically necessary. Your doctor may want to wait that late so that he/she can better determine the sex and decrease the chance of telling you the wrong gender! Or maybe your doctor wants to do a scan at this particular point in your pregnancy for medical reasons (and he's not doing the scan to tell gender, but he will let you know if he happens to see while he's doing the scan anyway).

Ask your doctor about this. He/she may have a very good reason for waiting until 26-28 weeks!

It is a little late but maybe the doctor wants to be sure. The baby will be more developed at 28 weeks. I had my first sonogram at 20 weeks then I had another one at 28 weeks to make sure we were having a girl.

hmm. maybe the are too full of patients for the sonogram. But I had been able to see what my children were at 20 wks usually, or about the 26-28 too.
Sometimes you cant really tell at 20 cause the boys look about the same as a girl, so..the doc may wait till he can tell a bit easier when baby is older.

No, that's about right if the only reason for the sonogram is to check gender. I don't know how far along you are but I had an ultrasound much earlier than that for routine reasons and we found out the gender then.

maybe your dr wants to make sure he/she will definately be able to find gender and won't need to repeat if it is too early, because sonograms are really expensive, especially if you have bad insurance or don't have insurance, plus getting an appointment for it takes a while, unless you have a medical condition that would risk the baby's health, then you get the earliest apointments. You should probably just come out and ask your Dr.

that is kind of late, by about 4-6 weeks from when mine always were, i don't know why she would do that sorry, if you're concerned you could ask her to do it earlier, although the sonogram isn't actually to determine gender its to measure baby and make sure he/she is developing properly getting to find out what you're having is an added bonus that you can get most of the time

That is the perfect time! I had mine at 20 weeks and they said it was a girl. Then I had to have another one around 32 weeks because I was measuring small. They then told me I was going to have a boy!

If you do it later than 20 weeks your best bet at finding the gender is perfect. As for everything else they measue it's a good time as well because the baby isn't too big to meaure your fluid.

Well don't worry...this way they will be able to see more clearly that everything is fine with your baby. Some insurance company's only pay for you to have a few ultra sounds done so maybe that has something to do with it. Just be happy that you will be having one and that everything will be great. Hopefully the baby will "show what your looking for"...good luck & congrats.

*Oh I agree...they aren't strictly doing the scan to check for the sex of the baby. They are checking for medical reasons...if the baby shows what it is then that is just a bonus.

After 20-22 weeks is a ideal time.
It also depends on your insurance. Some insurance companies will only cover 1 sonogram in a healthy pregnancy.

Scans are performed in the second and third trimesters to confirm gender. I agree with some of the responders that this may be an insurance issue. In any case, the advice to come out and ask her is a sound one. If you wish to know your OB/Gyn's reasons for what she does, you should be asking HER.
