the metra and CTA do not go that far.
lake forest is a rich suburb.
i lived just north of there in lake bluff.
my dad taught high school in lake forest.
things may have changed, that was about 40 years ago
but it is probably still relatively wealthy.
big houses. you might not be able to afford it.
see if you can find any houses or apartments within your price range there.
the winters are really cold. the summers are really hot.
it's near lake michigan.
evanston is not as high class. more middle class and lower class people live there, but rich people too. i still think it's too far out for public transportation.

Robin is on track and has good information.
Both Lake Forest and Evanston can be great places to live, but I think Evanston offers a wider variety and is much more accessible to Chicago (if that's important).
Lake Forest is the Old Money suburb of Chicago and is a beautiful place to live, but it is very expensive and if you are 25 years old, the social life in this part of the North Shore will probably not appeal to you very much.
Evanston is diverse. There are very high end neighborhoods, some very sketchy areas and everything in between. Also, it has more of an active downtown that includes Northwestern University. Whatever your social interests are, you are likely to be able to find something that appeals to you in Evanston. Also, it is much closer to downtown Chicago.
If you are as Conservative as you suggest, however, Evanston might be too diverse for your tastes.

It's very nice. Evanston is so close to Chicago that you can see the downtown skyline from some places in the suburb. The Metra trains and the L both run right through Evanston's downtown, so it feels like you're in Chicago. In fact, if you weren't told you weren't in Chicago, you probably would assume you were, what with the L trains! Downtown Evanston is great, with lots of shops and restaurants, and right by the lake, and there are young people everywhere due to Northwestern University, so it's quite safe day and night for the most part. The disadvantage is, of course, that since it's such a nice place, it's expensive to rent there.

I agree with Robin and Waldeck.
Lake Forest is one of the most affluent, expensive and prestigious suburbs of Chicago. The average home in Lake Forest costs well in excess of $1 million. Metra (commuter rail) goes to Lake Forest, but not the CTA.
Evanston is a bit mixed. There are some wealthy areas and some so so areas. Evanston is the home of Northwestern University and is more liberal than you might expect in a suburb full of $500,000 homes. Both the CTA and Metra go to Evanston.

The METRA does indeed go to Lake Forest -- in fact, there are two stops for two different METRA lines in Lake Forest itself.
The El doesn't go that far north.
Lake Forest is an affluent suburb -- you'll get the quiet, green spaciousness which comes with being out of the city...but you'll be within commuting distance of downtown.
Evanston is closer to downtown -- has METRA and El service, is more varied culturally and economically, and has the pros and cons of being a college town.

Evanston is accessible through Chicago public transit, but it takes a long time to get to downtown Chicago from there. I think Lake Forest is inaccessible by public transit.

It takes 7 seconds for the YahooAnswers questions to load for me to be able to click on the [add your answer] box. thus, is my laptop slow?
