Some expired domains are bought up by companies that look to do nothing but make big bucks off of the former owner. I don't know that this company is doing that, but that is my impression. Also, Register.com is a pain to work with. I prefer working with Network Solutions if at all possible. If you offer to buy it back, start very low and bargain as much as you can with them. The other option you have is to register the .net name and go from there.
