It depends on what you consider "acceptable". Some people have very different ideas of what proficient, fluent, etc. mean. I have actually heard people say they were fluent in a language after going through one $20 teach yourself book or by having a vocabulary of 1,000 words. Yeah right! I've been learning German about 2.5 years and I think it's pretty good and I know thousands of words. But in no way do I consider myself fluent.

Getting to an acceptable level, whatever that is, of course also depends on how good you are at languages, how much time you spend at it, and the methods. You should also definitely try to find someone to speak it with, because speaking is one of the hardest things in a foreign language and you'll need lots of practice.

any language is possible but for german it might take 6 months to get to an acceptable level...very gutteral language and not a pretty one at that...is it possible yes...the younger you are the more apt you are to learn a language quicker....if you have to pick an easier language pick spanish...a beautiful language...french....a cool language....greek or japanese...but german is very ugggggggggg.anyways you can learn yourself...there are cd programs which you can learn, speak, write, pronounce numerous languages...anyways enough of my yapping you get the point ...good luck=)

That really depends on how adept you are to learning languages. Some have a knack for it, and some don't.
