I debated this for years, and finally got my one and only tattoo for Xmas last year. I'm 33. If you don't know what you want, don't do it!
I decided one night to sit down and design my own. I'm not an artist, I used pics from the internet and put them together until I found what I wanted. I wanted a rose somewhere to signify my daughter (Rosie) but didn't want a pic of a rose.
I finally came up with a celtic horses' head (love horses) with the word Rose hidden in the design. As soon as I had completed it I knew it was the one. I've had it done on the small of my back where I can hide it if I want, and show it if I want.
You could try putting temporary tattoos of different designs in different places to help you decide.
I'm 100 percent sure of the design and the placing, please make sure you are before you do anything!

Well done for not just rushing in and getting the same tat as everyone else. I was 50 before I got my first ones and really love them, they are sort of tribal with green eyes in the centre and I have them on the back of each leg just above the ankle so I can choose to show them or not. I also have Japanese symbols on one inner arm and a dragon on the other. Have a look on all the tattoo images on Google for some excellent ideas. Good luck.

First go and visit a few tattoo parlours and view their design plates, you might get some ideas from that, then buy a couple of tattoo mags and some art books.
You will instantly know what is the perfect design for you!! The design will metaphorically speak to you-then you'll know that is the one!
I did this with most of mine & still love them years on-because I knew in my heart which to have even though I hadn't always planned what to have.

I extremely have Phil Ochs tattooed on my arm (people singer) I even have "in no way Die" and a rose tattooed in the time of my ft, with a tigerbat above the ft on my left foot for Tiger military. I see me getting a pair extra musician tattoos. I extremely have an Ochs lyric tattoed around the decrease back of my neck (Sacred are the scars) and an Op Ivy lyric around the insides of the two hands (that's perfect i might say... i would not have it any opposite direction.) i'm thinking a pair of warm-rod lifestyle tat, skulls and roses and a banner, gotta p.c.. the lyric to circulate in the banner regardless of the undeniable fact that. because it stands as we talk, i might in all probability pick "In death as in existence, i'm going to arise" or "My judgment of right and incorrect consists of the burden of blood."

If you aren't sure, don't let your friend rush you into anything. Wait until you have found the design that you want. If you've been thinking about it for years and nothing has appealed to you, maybe your subconscious is telling you that you don't realy want a tatoo at all. Just because your friend has one,or five, doesn't mean you have to get tattooed also.

Something that holds personal resemblance and meaning to yourself really. Make sure you are happy with where you want it to go too. Take into account Strappy tops and dresses and weither your comfortable with it being shown. Make sure the size will be appropriate too. Choose colours (if any) wisely.
Good luck in choosing a fab design and enjoy your new tattoo.

if it hasn't come to you yet it probably won't by next weekend. i can't explain it but i just know when i think of a tattoo that will suit me. i just KNOW. i have thought of tattoos before and thought about getting them but after some thought i realized that it's not something i really want. you should definitely think on it for a while after you make a decision. so if i were you i would hold off. otherwise you may end up regretting it later in life.

If your not ready to choose, put it off, take loads of random pictures from magazines, the internet, books, stick them altogether and then ask to talk to your chosen tattooist, tell them what you like from each picture and ask them to come up with a unique design that fits your preferences exactly. Tattooists are artist and they will spend time coming up with the right design for you. Dont rush into a decision that you will regret, tattoos should be special and unique to your body.

I honestly cannot tell you how to just think of something to get, but do NOT just settle on something because you want to get a tattoo. You will end up regreting it. Wait until you absolutely know what you want because you will have it for life. Trust me I know. I ran and got a tattoo as soon as I could and years later hated it. I have since had it covered up.
