It's Bengali, if you mean by number of native speakers. Tamil, Telugu, Malayalee, etc ahve much less speakers. But if you mean by number of people who understand the language, it's Hindi as more people understand English than Hindi, especially in the southern and eastern states. English is the only de facto language in all Indian states.

In terms of what all (common +poor + Rich people ) are able to speak , I think Hindi or rather a mix of Hindi+Punjabi+Urdu+ Local Accents (May be they call it Hindustani) would be first and second would be English . But second could well be Bengali or Telugu as well.

uhh...in the country as whole? prolly English....Hndi first(bein main national language), English second(in southern Indiia, i think english/hndi is still not much understood...they follow dravidian languages) a lot of states, w a lot of languages!!!
