I was told by my ISP that I was not receivng much in the way of packets however, outgoing packets were ok. This helps explain the lack of speed I get (or high ping). I ran two different programs that tested my system and receiveed recommended changes, which I made. My service is still slow and the ISP says they can do nothing further.

My questions: what are packets? And, can a five year old modem slow my system down that much?

SYSTEM: Runing WindowsXP Media PRO on an HP Pavillion w/2Mg processor and1Mg RAM on motherboard. this PC is hooked up direclty to the modem.

Any advice to spped things up would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Working as a ISP tech myself.

Probably , the best option for you to do is to replace your modem with a US Robotics. I bet when you bought your computer it came with a win modem that is a piece of junk.

You could also try to place 3 commas after the phone number you are dialing to help with line errors. example phone 2225555,,,

Also , clear your TCP/IP settings , click start - run , type "cmd" no quotes , hit enter. Then type "netsh int reset all" no quotes and hit enter then "netsh winsock reset all" enter no quotes.

Yes a five year old modem can slow you down. I upgraded my modem after having mine about i dont remeber but probably like 8 or five years old. And it made such a diference. Packets is just a way to talk about information exchange i believe

Ya just get a new modem. And if that does not make a difference which i would be surprised if i didnt then talk to your internet provider.

Click start >click run >type in msconfig click on the startup tab then uncheck everything there except your anti virus and internet connection . Click ok and your computer will restart .

Read Windows XP Super Tweaks and stop un-necessary xp servics.
