My favourite Spanish name is Maite - prevalent in the North of Spain and pronounced "my - tay". It is a contraction of the common name María Teresa - but it also happens to be the Basque word for Love. I wanted to call my daughter Maite when she was born until it was pointed out that in the UK, where we live, Maite would be read and pronounced like the English word "Mate".
