Not only is it an illegal act it is actually a class "C" Felony in most states.

If you have a T-1 and your own server and you are paying for the bandwidth (operating as your own ISP) You are free to do what you wish. However if you are using a DSL provided from your phone company as a single use residential licence then you are looking at some jail time and fines you probably can't afford.

Contact your provider and ask them this question if you are unsure. If you are nervous about asking them, then you probably already know the answer.

This falls under the same laws as buying a cable subscription for your home and then running cable free to all of your neighbors.... You will be arrested eventually.

Somewhere like Borders runs it own uplink they don't buy a single licence DSL or other High speed internet and set out to fraud the provider.

I will assume that you are in the U.S.A. Thats the prespective my answer is comming from. Is it against the law? Well, that depends. What does the agreement between you and your ISP say? Theres no law in the u.s.a. against sharing Wifi, but when you enter into a contract with an ISP you agreed to their terms of service.

If you share your wifi, you are putting yourself in a bad situation. IF anyone does anything against the law using your net connection, then authorities will come looking for you. (However, wheter or not you are legally responsible - for what they do - is debateable.) If you are going to share your connection, consider setting the router so that there is a limit on the bandwidth for IP's other than your own. For example 10 kb a second. That way people aren't likely to try and download big files; because the download would be so slow. But they could still surf the internet and read web pages.

Open wifi also means that if someone is close enough to your house they can use your connection; a person you don't know could use it - not just your neighbours.

Sharing wifi is a nice thing to do. I'm only trying to make you aware of the risks involved.

I found an interesting article which would likely be of interest to you:

Depends solely on any agreement you have with your ISP. It's not like you need an FCC license to operate a wireless network.

Yes. It is known as "theft of services". You can be sued by your ISP. Everyone to whom you give that service will NOT sign with the ISP for the service. So they are losing the money while your neighbors are getting the service. They can sue you (and your neighbors) for that.

nope. Its like borders your using they're internet for free. Its only illegal if your neighbors are stealing it and you don't know about it. Just be careful because if they do illegal activities, they will trace the ip address to you and you could get in trouble.

Unless your neighbour is a terrorist, murderer etc. you won't get into trouble. Because if somebody commits a crime or they surf suspicious looking websites and all, they can track your IP address.

its not illegal unless you sell it but i wouldnt recomment it because of security risk, you dont want people using your wireless network and IP address to do illegal things like child porn and scams lol
