It irritates me too! I heard on the news not too long ago that some schools are going to base their curriculum around test taking skills and they will not count spelling mistakes off. I have a feeling that 10 years from now we're going to have a plethora of people who can't even write a decent resume! IQ level has nothing to do with it. It's taking pride in what you write and using spell check!

Using "Spell Check" has not dumbed down most people. They've never learned and applied such instruction sufficient in school to retain the information.
It's the same with using quotation marks with commas and periods. The quotation mark ALWAYS* goes after the comma or period and not before. Further, only one exclamation point or one question mark is all that is required--no additional ones.
These two items are irritants to me.
*Some writers in the U.K. and Canada have been known to place their ending quotation marks before the comma and period and their manuscript is acceptable in most agencies and publishing houses.

It bugs me too. Even though we know what they're trying to convey, it seems to me that our (American) educational system has failed or people just don't care. Keep in mind that this is an international site and that a lot of visitors here have English as a second language.

You are right ,it is very irritating. But please let's not forget that some people really do try . Like me for example. I was diagnosed with Dyslexia in third grade. I am now 38 . I continue to struggle with it every day .It has nothing to with intelligence, words, and numbers get all mixed up to me.

I agree with you, sometimes I can't even understand what I'm reading and have to read the question repeatedly because it's written so badly, lately, I don´t even bother to open questions with misspellings or those that are written in an "abbreviated" way. I just can't understand them.

It does bother me. Worse yet are all the intentional misspellings, using numerals and letters instead of complete words, etc. It's a sad and lazy trend.

Yes, at least 70% of the people who use this site don't know the difference between "you're" and "your".
