In typical, idiotic Liberal fashion, one of your respondents claimed that the Cold War ended by itself. This is Liberal thinking in a nutshell: they can't tolerate people who are truly great, so they have to knock them down to assuage their own feelings of inadequacy.
Even Liberal outlets like the Economist Magazine grudgingly admit Reagan at least speeded up the demise of the USSR by 20 years. That of course, is the least that could be said. Had Carter stayed in office, the USSR would have continued growing, gobbling up countries from Asia to Africa and Central America. The USSR would have gotten stronger, not disintegrated.
By now almost everyone, including some Liberals, realize Reagan's strategy: he bankrupted them. All you need to do is read any truthful book about Reagan, and you can read in Reagan's own words what he planned to do. While all the major economists of the day, Galbraith, Samuelson, swore the USSR was economically rock solid, Reagan scoffed. All he needed to see was the deplorable stores in Moscow. Just from that he was able to conclude that no healthy economy has that paltry, abysmal array of goods for sale.
Liberals want to discredit Reagan because he is the clarion call for all Republicans, and a reminder of what we must strive for. If we honor Reagan's legacy, Liberals have to admit they are always on the wrong side of history, something that will be guaranteed if democracy thrives in Iraq.
This Reagan bashing is just like every time a musician or actor is at the top of his field. People immediately start trying to tear him down because seeing someone who is truly great makes people feel inadequate. They always want to find some flaw so they can denigrate the person, portray him as nothing special, and hence feel better about themselves.
Do I care about Reagan? Here is my answer: I moved to the Czech Republic, and I still carry Ronald Reagan stamps in my wallet.
President Reagan, we miss you, and in troubling times like these, we selfishly wish you were still with us. You made us feel proud to be Americans.

It's all political. That's why the Dems are attacking Reagan's legacy. They may be attacking him because of what Rudy Giuliani said about him. I think the real reason Democrats dislike Ronald Reagan is because he made the former Soviet Union look like a disaster. It did finally collapse on its own. Democrats were not happy when George W. Bush invaded Iraq. Most liberals don't see any problem with having a tyrant like Saddam Hussein in control of everything. Saddam was in control of the world's second-largest oil supply, and he was telling his planes to shoot at American planes. There was no other option but to remove him from power. Liberals didn't have a problem with Bill Clinton as President. It didn't make any difference to them how he treated the people around him. Democrats always created some excuse as to why it was alright for him to have a sexual relationship with an intern in the Oval Office. I think a lot of liberals have learned why they were wrong about Bill Clinton, but that doesn't mean there are not those people in the far-left that despise everything about someone like Ronald Reagan.

Reagan's second term was a joke. The guy was not actually leading the country and was out of it half the time. You think some people are harsh on him now? You should have seen in when he was in office. The comics especially had a field day with his performance. I seem to remember many jokes about how he would press the red button accidently and set off world war III.
His first term he did pretty well since he wasn't yet a veg but to say his overt spending caused the downfall of the Soviet empire is abit American centric. The Soviets caused their own demise from corruption and inefficiences not because Ronald Reagan outspent them with the credit cards...
He also had his fair share of administration scandals not the least the Iran Contra scandal.
But in his defense he was VERY articulate his first term and really made you believe in him. He was about a million times better at speaking than El Dubya.

not practically are hard because of fact the Hypercrats attempt to bury the Reagan administration. outstanding what a good guy can do as President. Appalling what a nitwit can do to the country. I comprehend which you hate Reagan. it is advantageous too. We each and each have our standards for what's nice and not for the country. After watching Carter and Clinton, how can absolutely everyone in reliable experience of right and incorrect criticize something that Reagan did? Uoops, I forgot, some human beings have no experience of right and incorrect.

Ronald Reagan was an example of the old ways in government...you lead for a while and take care of your people and we'll lead for a while and take care of ours...it was ok...back and forth and going foreward...Reagan's policies certainly helped the richer...thru the trickle down theory....and then the Dem's controlled Congress......ther only thing i can complain about with Reagan is that the deficit grew quite a bit...but then cam the Dem's and raised taxes back where they were and started to fix things...Reagan was a good Conservative...didn't try to remake things...was a good leader

Nixon was a great US President for leading the US during the Cold war and survived it to remain as the only superpower after the collapse of USSR. However, with his little fault for espionage, he was being bashed until these days which should no longer be the case because he resigned honorably. He must not be equated with George Bush at present.

Funny how Reagan started out as a Democrat and ended up being the most famous Republican since Lincoln. Dems hate Reagan because he was too religious for them, too agressive militarily & diplomatically, he hated welfare, & his economic plans were to Capitalistic & he want to shrink US Govt as much as possible. I wish there were ten guys like Reagan left in the GOP unforunatly the GOP today couldn't be more different from Reagan.

It is fashionable to give Reagan credit for ending the Cold War. But a closer look will show you that the Soviet Union was falling apart before Reagan even came to office. Gorbachev has said he and fellow students knew that the Soviet System was doomed, they discussed this in the late 60's. I think Reagan was a lot luckier than good. But then I always said "I would rather be lucky than good" when I was competing in football.

I have always admired/respected our former President Ronald Reagan. No one is perfect however he did much for the good of this country. He will be always respected and admired by many. Let us allow him to rest in peace. His death was indeed a tragedy to many of us. Leave the past alone I say... and if are those who cannot say anything nice about our once President, perhaps their lips should remain closed on this issue.

Like all presidents, Regan had his flaws. The cold war ended by itself. Nobody outside the Soviet Union can take credit. As for the bashing, you are hunting for it. If you are going to listen to any extreme or fundamentalist media, then you can expect to hear them bashing and smearing the people they don't agree with.
As for Regan, himself, he was acceptable as a president, governor and actor. Unfortunately, medical conditions caught up with him when it was inappropriate and he started to lose his effectiveness.
