By allowing people to express their opinions without fear of prosecution. That's the whole concept.

It's not valid to silence people just becuase someone doesn't like what they are saying.

The Petition Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right of the people "to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." The right to petition has been held to include the right to file lawsuits against the government.

In other countries, the citizens may or may not have a voice in government. They may or may not be able to express themselves against the government i.e. protests, rallies, or boycotts. Women had to protest in order to be allowed the privilege to vote as a fair example of why freedom of speech is important. Imagine that... a woman having the same rights to vote as a man (without having the same 'accessories'). We did get the vote. And, of course, they could blame us for any and everything that went wrong after we got it. At one time, it was a new idea brought to the table.

Freedom of Speech supports the concept of democracy when nothing else does.

If people were afraid to or not allowed to express their ideas, there would be no innovation, people would not be alowed to be creative, to have different opinions to change the world...
