Fairly quickly, I pick up languages pretty fast, I don't want one that only has greetings and 5 verbs

Rocket French is a good course to learn French.

Berlitz is probably the most popular French-learning program, though it's heavy on CDs and such. If you really want just a book, then The Idiot's Guide to Learning French does a good job of being comprehensive.

Well i would suggest the Rosetta Stone, it's a cd though not a book. I believe it's been rated as the #1 system for learning new languages..A bit pricey..but worth it for a lot of people. Bon Chance!!

Try getting one of those "for dummies"... they aren't really for dummies, but anyway...
It's a LOT easier from a live person, take a class!
