Such as - links to home, contact, guestbook, etc. I am preparing to create a website and just want to know the basic things that should be on there.

The first, and most important, The front page should download/open quickly. Any more than 10-15 seconds will cause people annoyance and they'll just close out. Even with a good broadband some pages can take way too long to load.
The second is, be careful of colour choice. I've actually seen dark red text on a black background. I had a headache for a week. Design it on paper first, with coloured pens or whatever.

A uniform heading. So, when navigating from page to page - the home, contact, and guestbook links are always in the same spot.
