I am A VietNam Vet myself (1968-69). I truly can't explain why our vets are treated so badly especially at the VA as they always and this is from personal experience are treated like 'second class citizens.' I like to give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they are overworked, and stretched thin personnel wise and have budgetary constraints on top of all that, but I absolutely hate using the VA, but I did earn the privilege of going.

As for your comment, 'he probably didn't have a choice on whether he went there or not.' Boy, did you nail that especially if you were a draftee like I was during the 1966-69 years, you were pretty much headed over the puddle to the Nam.

Why he is homeless, who truly knows, some GI's returrning had problems especially combat vets with post traumatic stress which at the time was not a recognized 'condition' by the military nor the VA. A lot of us came home and were fortunate to move on with our lives, re-entered society, got jobs, got married and had families
but we all had something to deal with. For me, I had recurring nightmares for about 10 years and I finally made peace for lack of a better term with my demons. I am one of the lucky ones and a lot of guys as I said were able to move on. Unfortunately, this gentleman might have demons he is dealing with, it could be any of a myraid of problems, PTSD, drugs, alcohol, but that is absolutely no excuse for someone to spit at them or on them.

I would of went after the person who spit, but probably would of found out they weren't worth the trouble to try and explain their ignorance as they probably have no respect for anyone including themselves. You can teach stupid people but you can't teach or change ignorant ones!

Thank you for your concern about this vet and I hope I have somewhat answered your concerns and questions.

This is one of the more horrifying realities of our society: people will support troops only so long as they are in the field and under fire. Personally, I believe that our troops deserve far better than this treatment: any vet deserves lifetime healthcare for himself and his family, a pension, and job and school preferment with all expenses paid at ANY university or college the vet is able to attend, undergraduate or post graduate. We need to stop putting silly yellow ribbon stickers on our cars and start actually caring about these people.

Next time you see that, say something to the person who spit. I haven't seen this treatment personally, but anyone who is homeless does not deserve to be spat on.

If you see the guy again you should make him get up, and drag him to the nearest VFW post they will get him a hot meal and something to drink, and depending on post they might be able to get him membership for free(meaning the post pays for it). They will also help him look for a job.
