It is the common goal that bonds. When the attack of 9/11 took place the common goal was to save as many lives as possible which lead to everyone moving past their differences & working towards a greater good.
It is said that humanity's greatest moments come from facing adversity and working together towards a common cause.

because they are making the best of a bad situation. when you are putting your life in the hands of your fellow soldiers and they are doing the same to you, a bond developes that is stronger than almost any you could imagine.
