Im not against having our own tv channel but i've now come across a lot of black ppl like myself who wont watch BET anymore because of the way it potrays african americans. Like some of the shows and the ppl really live up to the stereotype that is placed on black ppl. I heard there is a Channel One that is a more positive look on the black community than BET is, but unfortunately I dont get that where I live. BET is also now owned by the same company as MTV and VH1, so that makes me wonder who really is in controll of BET..is it still the blacks as they would make ppl think or its someone who has no idea what it means to be black? :)
I was just wondering, I dont mean to offend anyone who loves to watch BET, i just wanted to know if anyone else felt the same.

Before BET was sold, Bob Johnson, it's black owner and founder was quoted saying he's in it for the money and not the upliftment of black people.

That should've been a wake up call right there but unfortunately none of us new about his feelings and gave b.e.t. the ratings it needed to become the success it has.

Around 2000, the channel was sold to Viacom and I highly doubt that they care anymore about portraying positive black images than Bob did.

TV One is the name of the "other" black cable channel available on satelite and I believe it does portray blacks more positively.

I can not stand BET. It is the conglomeration of all of the worst Black American stereotypes in America. I think some black people watch it just to not have to watch shows dominated by white people, like "friends" and "seinfeld". We all know about "Seinfeld". But that is a different story.

Unfortunately, mr. johnson, or whatever his name was, is a Capitalist. Most Black People don't know what that means because ****** like mr. johnson got paid hella money to run a station that does not teach Blacks about the American society; BET taught music, and that music was the only way Blacks would do anything in this country.

Isn't it funny how every other national syndicated channel has a sitcom line up, new shows every year, real, although depressing, news and other formats. BET got videos, videos, re-runs of old sitcoms, videos, the top ten video countdown, and an attempt at news with mr. Smiley, and then slow jam videos. WHAT!!

mr. johnson sold that s*%^ and never looked back because he never cared about blacks anyway, it was all about money. and he didn't mind selling out blacks to get paid.

Black people do not own bet. It's been a while since it was sold! Of course, it exploits anybody's base nature, or crassness. The same with the other channels for entertainment. Proud to say that I haven't watched bet in 5 yrs at least...so my info could be outdated! lol.

well, since it a white-owned company it is most definitely not "our" channel. And yes it is very exploitive and shows almost completley stereotypical views of Black people. Do you notice that nearly all the news programs and teen summit-type shows that were on the channel are now gone? Also remember that whites are responsible for about 67% or so of rap music sales.

I agree with MAC Man I remember Mr. Johnson saying that he was in it only for the money. I don,t watch much TV anyway but what bothers me is to see so many black women who hate a business that was Owen by a black man I wonder now that they know that it is Owen by the man will they start back watching it and I wonder do they listen to rap music

I agree. They have started to glamourize the thug mentallity, and all of the negative stereotypes about the black community. I do think the new ownership has had something to do with it, and I also think that hip hop has been dumbed down so much that the music is portraying blacks in a bad light. I miss the Donnie Simpson, Chris Thomas days.

Wow, I thought I was the ONLY person who felt this way. I hate BET with a passion. Cannot stand it! Like you, I don't get Channel One where I live either; wish I did though.

And as far as ownership, in my opinion, Bob Johnson was is 1000x worst than the people he sold his company to. Bob Johnson admitted to only being in it for the money, and he was the one who cut off shows like BET news, got rid of Tavis Smiley, and he was the one allowing BET Uncut to air as long as it did.

I HATE BET!!! It promotes black stupidity and discourages individuality.

I can be black and NOT dance, come from a two family home, like classical music or jazz or non popular music, can like foreign films, can be intelligent, can say "my husband or partner" and not "my baby daddy".

If BET had a more accurate portrayal of blacks then the "ghetto" aspects are fine...but I always wondered if it was actually run by the KLAN!!!!

I think BET exploits black people but not nearly as much as rap music and hip hop culture. Rap and hip hop showcase the most negative stereotypes about blacks.

I finished-heartedly agree. as quickly as I matured and that i ultimately gained an know-how, i ended watching wager altogether. wager would not admire me as a darkskinned woman... it would not even admire the Black community!! they do no longer prepare efficient, clever, and advantageous classes in any respect anymore. like all different clientele suggested, they perpetuate our stereotypes. If a foreigner watched wager for an afternoon to income some perception on what Black individuals are approximately, what do you think of his/her effect people may be? are you able to easily think of?! different than for wager refusing to coach greater high quality Black action pictures and tv shows yet rather organic coonery each and every gotdamn day... and their refusal to incorporate ALL genres of song that we make somewhat than merely the greater serious of commerical hip hop and this bubble-gum r&b... they actually do exhibit greater mixed and Latina females than Black females. i replace into rather with the aid of with them while they replaced the 1st (and in elementary terms) Black woman host of 106th and Park with Latina females (first Jullisa, then ultimately Rocsi... and after Rocsi would be yet another non-Black woman). there is obviously an schedule against Black women people... yet I do think of that it is going a splash previous that and it rather is to mortify and harm a lifeless ringer for us ALL. "Do you notice black women people on the disguise of Asian and Latino adult males's pastime magazines?" sturdy, and extremely genuine, remark. i'm conviced that Black women people have the cruelest stigma placed upon them because of the fact all varieties of the media are making it look that even our very own adult males do no longer desire us anymore. Self-hating Black male celebrities who talk badly approximately Black women people (Ocho Cinco or besides the fact that) and each male singer and rapper calling out each and every race of ladies people yet their very own are not helping the case the two. . .
